This publication presents for the first time the results of the excavation work carried out in Alexandria by the European Institute of Underwater Archaeology. This work was made possible with the support of the Hilti Foundation and Discovery Communication Inc.
The 1992 season saw the first topographical surveys, and the subsequent archaeological campaigns of 1996 and 1997 are reported and analysed in detail.
The 1992 survey was undertaken using the most advanced techniques available. These allowed the team to determine the topography of the now submerged Ptolemaic port. The ancient city plan, a wealth of statues and other artefacts, remains of buildings and the layout and function of the city?s harbour installations are discussed at length.
